Tragedy Strikes: Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman And Husband Killed In Fatal Shooting
Minnesota is reeling after a politically motivated attack left State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, dead. The shooting occurred early Saturday at their home in Brooklyn Park. Authorities also responded to a separate attack on State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who were critically injured but survived after emergency surgery. Both lawmakers were members of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
Governor Tim Walz called the attacks “politically motivated assassinations.” The suspect, disguised as a police officer, fled after a shootout with responding officers at the Hortmans’ residence. No officers were injured, and a multi-agency manhunt is now underway, involving the FBI and state officials.
Melissa Hortman was a respected legislator, community volunteer, and former Speaker of the House. Her husband, Mark, worked in IT as a program manager and was known for his leadership in tech innovation. Their deaths have sparked grief and national outrage.

President Biden condemned the violence, stating: “This heinous attack motivated by politics should never happen in America. We must unite against political violence.”
