28-Year-Old American Airlines Pilot Dies in Plane Crash Near Washington – His Father Speaks Out

Timothy Lilley is mourning the loss of his 28-year-old son, Sam, who was killed in a plane crash near Reagan National Airport on January 29. Sam, a pilot with PSA Airlines, was one of two pilots aboard the American Airlines flight that collided with a military helicopter. Sam had a deep passion for aviation, which he shared with his father, a former military helicopter pilot. He had been engaged to be married and was set for a fall wedding.
Timothy described Sam as a happy, kind person who lived life to the fullest and was dedicated to helping others. Sam’s friend and fellow pilot, Skeeter Little, remembered him as always cheerful, with a great sense of humor. The crash, which involved a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 and a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter, occurred while the plane was approaching Reagan National Airport. Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River.
As investigations continue, Timothy, drawing on his own flying experience, believes the Army helicopter pilot made a fatal error. President Donald Trump expressed condolences and pledged to support the families while seeking answers to prevent future accidents. At least 40 bodies have been recovered, and the plane’s black boxes have been found, aiding in the investigation.
