She Was Missing for 529 Days—Her Owners Could Barely Recognize Her
When Josh and Georgia set out for a peaceful beach camping trip to Kangaroo Island, Australia, they brought along their beloved miniature Dachshund, Valerie. Weighing less than four kilograms and wearing a pink collar, Valerie was more than a pet—she was family.

In November 2023, while camping near remote Stokes Bay, Valerie slipped out of her pen and ran off into the bush after being startled by strangers. Despite desperate searches by her owners and local volunteers, Valerie disappeared. The couple was heartbroken, and after exhausting every effort, they had to leave the island without her.
As time passed, hope faded. How could such a small dog survive alone in the wild? But more than a year later, in early 2025, reports began to emerge: a small dog with a pink collar had been seen 15 kilometers from where Valerie vanished. Trail cameras confirmed it—it was her. Somehow, Valerie had survived over 500 days in the wild.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue stepped in, working with Josh and Georgia to bring Valerie home. They used traps, food, and familiar scents, but Valerie remained cautious. After 540 days, she finally stepped into a humane trap. Thin but healthy, she instantly recognized her family at the reunion, sparking tears and joy from everyone involved.
Now safe at home, Valerie is recovering with warmth, love, and care. Her incredible story is a testament to resilience, hope, and the deep bond between humans and their pets. Even the smallest among us can be incredibly brave—and sometimes, love really does lead the way home.
