College Student’s Sudden Neck Sensation Uncovers Life-Changing Diagnosis

Maddie King’s Neck Lump Led to a Life-Changing Cancer Diagnosis

Maddie King, a healthy 19-year-old college student, was preparing to study abroad in Los Angeles when she discovered firm lumps in her neck. Soon after, she was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a severe blood cancer. The disease had spread through her neck, chest, and lungs.

Though her symptoms — a cough, night sweats, and small lumps — didn’t seem serious, Maddie trusted her instincts and sought answers. After uncertain results in Sydney and a doctor’s warning in LA, she returned to Australia for further testing. A biopsy confirmed the cancer.

The diagnosis, though shocking, was a relief after months of confusion. She immediately began fertility preservation and underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Her life drastically changed: no university, no social life, just survival.

At just 19, Maddie was battling a disease most of her peers couldn’t relate to, while also grieving her father, who had died of pancreatic cancer three years earlier.

In March 2025, Maddie celebrated five years in remission with a trip to Vietnam. Although she still monitors her health, she lives with strength and gratitude.

Support from the group Cancer Chicks, founded by Rikki Stern, was crucial during her treatment. Through retreats, peer support, and small acts of kindness — like donated meals or messages — Maddie found hope and belonging.

Now 25 and working in marketing in Sydney, Maddie shares her story to raise awareness and highlight the importance of accessible, female-led cancer support. She supports Cancer Chicks’ partnership with Afterpay, allowing people to donate in smaller, more manageable amounts.
