Michelle Obama sets the record straight on divorce rumors

Michelle Obama Shuts Down Divorce Rumors, Emphasizes Women’s Right to Choose Themselves

Appearing on Sophia Bush’s podcast Work in Progress, Michelle Obama addressed ongoing divorce rumors about her and Barack Obama. About nine minutes in, the former First Lady spoke candidly about life as an “empty nester,” now that daughters Malia and Sasha have moved out. “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she said joyfully, highlighting how she’s finally prioritizing her own needs after years of supporting her family.

Michelle explained that society often struggles with women asserting independence. “When I say ‘no,’ people are like, ‘I get it,’” she noted. Yet, her personal choices led some to wrongly assume marital issues. “People couldn’t fathom that I was making a choice for myself… so they assumed my husband and I are divorcing.”

The rumors intensified after Michelle missed Donald Trump’s inauguration and Jimmy Carter’s funeral — events Barack attended alone. While she didn’t specify what triggered the gossip, her absences sparked speculation.

Adding fuel to the fire, In Touch Weekly claimed actress Jennifer Aniston was pursuing Barack — a claim Aniston quickly dismissed: “I’ve met [Barack] once. I know Michelle more than him.” Michelle used the moment to call attention to the pressures women face and the importance of prioritizing self-care without fear of judgment.
