Mother of teen stabbed in heart at school track meet breaks silence

The tragic story of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a beloved Frisco ISD athlete, has shaken the Texas community. Austin was fatally stabbed in the chest during a track meet on April 2 by another student, identified as Anthony Karmel from Centennial High School.

According to Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, the incident began when they asked Karmel to move from their school’s tent area. Karmel became aggressive, pulled a knife from his backpack, and stabbed Austin, who died in Hunter’s arms despite efforts to save him.

Austin’s mother, Meghan Metcalf, broke her silence in an emotional interview, saying she was heartbroken and couldn’t understand how such a small conflict could lead to her son’s death. “My son is gone, and I don’t really have words,” she said, urging parents to hold their children close.

Karmel has been charged with first-degree murder but claims self-defense. The case has sparked public debate, mourning, and support for the Metcalf family across Texas. Vigils and memorials have honored Austin, a talented athlete with a bright future, whose life was tragically cut short.
