What to Know About the Plane Crash near Washington, DC – The First Major US Commercial Aviation Disaster Since 2009

On January 29, 2025, a tragic mid-air collision occurred near Washington, D.C. between an American Airlines Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The crash took place near Reagan National Airport, causing the plane, with 64 passengers aboard, and the helicopter, carrying three military members, to plunge into the Potomac River. Witnesses, including Ari Schulman, described seeing sparks and flames before the plane banked sharply.
The incident, which has captured national attention, marks the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2009. Search and rescue teams, faced with freezing temperatures, high winds, and floating ice, are struggling to locate survivors. DC officials confirmed both aircraft were in the river and stressed that efforts are focused on rescue operations. Families of the victims, including those from the U.S. figure skating community, are anxiously awaiting news.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, and search efforts continue with the assistance of nearly 300 responders. The FBI’s dive team has also joined the operation. The crash disrupted air traffic, diverting 19 flights, and Reagan National Airport remains closed for the time being. A prayer vigil was held in Wichita to support those affected by the disaster.
